As a first step in their partnership, UNITAR and CEDS implemented  on 16, 17 and 18 December 2024, a common  three-day United Nations model negotiation exercise expected to offer the participants  the opportunity to exploit the various theories to the practice of multilateral diplomacy. The latter were CEDS PhD auditors in international politics and diplomacy, in strategy and international security and in business diplomacy, were to be confronted to the member states’ foreign policies and to the arenas of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly. They all had to work on a concrete case of crisis that took place 13 years ago : the case of negotiating the UNSC 1973 (2011) resolution authorising a military intervention in Libya. Each of them represented a country, and they were enough to constitute the UNSC and a UNGA of smaller size, with a scenario that was expected to be different than the real one. The session was opened by the CEDS General Director, Mrs Céline CLAVERIE, and monitored by four instructors : Mr. Jon Hans COETZER, Ambassador Thierry BECHET, Ambassador Eugène BERG, Mr. Richard AMALVY, and Fouad NOHRA.

This was a privileged opportunity to experience the theories of diplomatic negotiation, to know concretely how to deal with the United Nations principles, rules and with the rules of procedure of their respective bodies. CEDS auditors originated from more than twenty countries were really reflecting the existing diversity within the United Nations arena.
